Rongai route begins with a rough drive to the eastern slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro. The road can be difficult in bad weather especially during rainy seasons. Day 1 - RONGAI GATE (Nalemoru) TO SIMBA CAMP 2,600m (2 Hrs)
Drive from Arusha to Marangu Gate for the necessary registration formalities and then transferred by Road to Rongai, which should take about 1.5 hours. The climb starts at the village of Nalemoru (1,950 m.) through fields of maize and potatoes before entering the pine forest. The climb is consistently and gently through attractive forest that shelters a variety of wildlife. Reaching Simba Campsite, at the edge of the moorland zone (2,600 m.), giving you extensive views over the Kenyan plains. (7km, 3-4 hrs Trekking). Dinner and overnight at Simba Camp.
Day 2 - SIMBA CAMP TO THE KIKELELWA CAMP
After breakfast start with steady walk ascent up to the ‘First and Second Cave’ (3,450 m.) where you will stop for hot lunch. Here while taking your lunch you will be viewing spectacular views of Kibo Peak and the Eastern ice fields on the crater rim. Leave the main trail and strike out across the moorland on a smaller path towards the jagged peaks of Mawenzi. The campsite is in a sheltered valley near Kikelelwa Camp (3,600 m.) (15km, 5-7 hrs of trekking). Dinner and overnight at Kikelelwa Camp.
Day 3 - KIKELETWA CAMP TO MAWENZI TARN HUT
Trailing start with short but steep climb up grassy slopes, which are rewarded with superb circular views and a tangible sense of wilderness, before reaching Mawenzi Tarn (4,330 m.), for camping. Spend the rest of the day resting or exploring the surrounding area as an aid to acclimatization (10km, 5 – 7 hrs. of trekking). Lunch, dinner and overnight at Mawenzi tarn hut.
Day 4 - MAWENZI TARN HUT TO KIBO / SCHOOL HUT
Early morning proceeds with trekking crossing the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo to reach Kibo or School Camp hut at the foot of the Kibo crater wall (8 km, 6 – 7 hrs of trekking) for an early diner and early sleep and wake up at 11.00 pm for final preparation and ascent.
Day 5 - KIBO / SCHOOL HUT TO SUMMIT – DOWN TO HOROMBO HUT
After midnight will be ready for an early beginning for the summit, normally 12:00 midnight, trailing through loose volcanic scree to reach the crater rim at Gillman’s Point, take a rest for short while before continuing to the Uhuru Peak (which might take 3 hours) After relaxing, watching the sun rise and taking memorable pictures, start descending to Kibo Hut for a rest and breakfast, then proceed to Horombo hut where you will take your last dinner and spend your last night at the mountain (13 – 15 Hrs walk). On this day, you will find yourself exhausted, thirsty and at times being lousy.
Day 6 - HOROMBO HUT TO MARANGU GATE
After breakfast descend to Mandara Hut for hot lunch and then proceed to Marangu Gate where you will do some paper work – signing out and issuing of Certificates. After procedures you will meet our driver who will take you to your Hotel for a leisure, hot shower and depending to your schedule, transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport OR Overnight.
