Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
After registering with the park authority you will initiate your Mount Kilimanjaro 8 days Machame route from Machame Gate. You will trek through thick montane forest that rises gradually. This section is quite beautiful and you will probably want to take some snapshots. Be on the viewpoint for exotic birds and black and white colobus monkeys. After 2.5 hours of climbing you will reach halfway clearing where you will take a rest from hiking. Continuing from here the montane forest merges into giant heather and you will head directly to Machame Hut. Machame Hut is where you will pitch your tent for the night.

Day 3 - MACHAME CAMP (2850M) TO SHIRA CAMP (3840M)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
From Machame Hut you will set out for Shira Camp. You will trek up a gentle rocky ridge and make your way to a place called Picnic Rock, where there are outstanding scenic of the Shira Plateau and the highpoints on the southern edge. After a rest at Picnic Rock you will continue to your mount Kilimanjaro 8 days Machame route across small stream beds to reach the flatter ground of the Shira Plateau. From this point, the mount Kilimanjaro 8 days Machame route is comparatively level and crosses through sparse bush and grass. You will pitch your tents at Shira Camp 1.

Day 4 - SHIRA CAMP (3840M) TO MOIR CAMP (4175M)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
We explore the Shira plateau for a full day. It is a gentle walk east toward Kibo’s glaciered peak. Then we continue to Moir Hut, a little used site on the base of Lent Hills. A variety of walks are available on Lent Hills making this an excellent acclimatization opportunity. Shira is one of the highest plateaus on earth.

Day 5 - MOIR CAMP (4175M) TO LAVA TOWER (4630M)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day four of mount Kilimanjaro 9 days machame route from the Shira Plateau, we continue to the east up a ridge, passing the junction towards the peak of Kibo. As we continue, our direction changes to the South East towards the Lava Tower, called the “Shark’s Tooth.” Shortly after the tower, we come to the second junction which brings us up to the Arrow Glacier at an altitude of 16,000ft.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day five of mount Kilimanjaro 8 days Machame route from Lava Tower descends into the Barranco Valley. More flora is present in this zone, particularly the area just before the Barranco campsite. After short break we leave Barranco and continue on a steep ridge passing the Barranco Wall, to the Karanga Valley campsite. Today is a relatively long day hiking and dinner is taken at Karanga camp where you will stay the night.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Today is another half day climbing for mount Kilimanjaro 8 days Machame route to Barafu camp, Once again lunch is taken in camp letting plenty of time to relax before the summit bid. Very little flora can be found at this altitude. Desolate alpine desert and at times robust winds rip over this camp and yet in the evening splendid views of Mawenzi peak are the norm. A relatively early dinner is taken before heading to rest for the evening. Please note that a six day trek omits the Karanga campsite, and explorers continue right to Barafu on the same day.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Most people advance just before midnight for the final summit bid. By dawn as the first rays of light start to appear, most arrive near the rim. Climbing via Stella Point which is on the crater rim affords a comparatively short final section of a 30minute trek to Uhuru peak the Roof of Africa. What goes up must come down and your goal today is to reach Mweka camp. Explorers typically take somewhere between five and seven hours to ascend, using headlamps and cold weather gear.
The descent back to Barafu takes roughly four hours. Some trekker’s scree slide down the slope, which entails slipping/running down the loose gravel at medium speed. From Barafu, trekkers typically take a short break, and continue downwards through the alpine desert and ensuing moorlands to Mweka Camp.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
From Mweka Hut, descend steely through the forest on a narrow path, along the crest of a broad ridge between two river valleys. Continue through the montane forest to Mweka Gate. Troops of black-and-white colobus monkeys can often be seen in the dense growth. From the Mweka gate you will be presented with your summit certificate, those reaching Stella Point will receive green certificates whilst those reaching Uhuru peak will receive gold certificates. Once the certificates are presented, you will be served a hot lunch before being and be transferred back to Kili Cottages Moshi with Celebration dinner with the team FB.

3 climbers shared their experience

  • I've climbed with William (a.k.a "King William" I actually still don't know why) as a main guide through this company - and I have to say it was great. He was always helpful, had a great balance of talking to us and keeping quiet while on the trek, food was great, and his team (chef and porters) were kind and always looked happy even after their tough job with some heavy loads.

Last day was tough. But when I reached the summit, I really felt rewarded after all the hard work. Thanks to Gaia Africana Travel and the team once again. When I do another route one day, it will be with you guys.

  • Although the main guide William gave us a lot of "push" on the summit day and I thought a bit more small rest was helpful, he did get all of us (we were a group of 4) to the top and I was very happy with the overall service. (William is a funny and cheering guy all the other days btw)

It was my first time climbing any mountains, but I was really happy climbing with this team. Porters were helpful, and the chef provided us with great (and sometimes too much) food everyday. Hot lunch and dinner made us feel great. Thanks so much!

  • One of the best experiences of my life!...with long lasting memories and friendships that will stay with me forever! I had a double transplant in 2013, which means I come with complications and I had to do the climb with a team/company I was sure I could trust would be capable of dealing with whatever may be thrown at us. I got that...and more. These guys came strongly recommended by others who had already walked with them and advice that I will be eternally thankful for. They were super accommodating and very reasonably priced, bending over backwards to meet our every demand and create one the best trips ever! Even with my complications and request for a slightly different itinerary? They did it. I honestly cannot speak more highly of such a fab Gaia Africana. X
